GPS Orienteering
GPS Orienteering is a great way to bring mentally stimulating technology into an afternoon of exploration and adventure. Strategy, Communication and effective teamwork will be required in order to complete the task in the most efficient method.
Using the GPS teaches useful navigation and planning skills while empowering the group to take responsibility for their decision making.
After a briefing on how to use a GPS the teams will follow clues and navigate their way around the area to find the pre set waypoints. At each waypoint the teams will have to use their creative problem solving abilities to complete a task. These could include solving a giant puzzle, completing a blind paddle, archery or a fear-factor eating competition.
Once all waypoints have been visited and the tasks completed the teams will head back to ‘Head Quarters’. The data from each GPS will give us an overview of the route and indicate the time the teams spent planning the route, time spent travelling, distance travelled and the average speed. We will determine which team planned and executed the most efficient route to all the waypoints.
This will illustrate the different team’s strategic approach to problem solving and will highlight some common errors in the process. We will download the routes onto Google Earth to show the teams an overview of the route they covered, where they found short cuts or got hopelessly lost!
Points are weighted for each activity so effective planning and teamwork is vital for this event. We wrap the event up with a prize giving and photo slideshow of the afternoon’s antics as well as a Google Earth flyover of the different approaches!
